Windows Mobile 6 with Chinese Fonts and input language

Question/Problem:

Hi,

I've been using Windows Mobile 6 for a while on my HTC phone, but it does not support the viewing of chinese characters on my screen. Neither can I input any chinese characters, as there is no way to type them. How do I add a chinese font and input language to my windows mobile device?

The answer/solution:

Mobile phones are usually localized, therefore, buying a phone in the west usually gets you a phone with latin based fonts and standard input languages and keypad for western alphabets.

First we need to enable your phone for reading chinese fonts. For this there are several methods but for us the recommendation by Trends Mobile worked fine. You can download their font (Sunglobe.cab.zip) and install it through active sync or by copying it to your memory card. Remember that some programs (like Garmin, Route66 etc) use their own fonts and won't be able to display chinese characters if you do not buy the localized version!).

Get the fonts here: http://www.trendsmobile.com/downloads/sunglobe.cab.zip

Then we require the added chinese input language. For this there are 2 alternatives, ZTA4 (well known and also recommended by trendsmobile) and PlumsIP. ZTA4 proved (for us) to be a real nuisance, since after installation our phones decided their active sync relationship with our exchange server was of no more use and started deleting all email, contacts and calendar items. The sync relationship had to be deleted and recreated, and ZTA4 uninstalled before things worked again. Therefore we highly recommend PlumsIP, since it also has a couple of extra features allowing for easier handwriting and a normal qwerty keyboard.
